Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary rehabilitation is an individualized program that teaches people how to improve their quality of life when they have chronic lung disease. Pulmonary rehabilitation is not a method to cure chronic lung disease but it is a course of training and life style modifications that can make life more active, fulfilling and satisfying. Your experience in pulmonary rehabilitation is guided by your desires and expectations. Living with a disease that makes breathing difficult and limits what you can do on a daily basis is frustrating. However, the staff at T.J. Samson Community Hospital is here to help ease those frustrations.
A respiratory therapist will perform an assessment that is based on a each person’s physical condition, ability to cope with the illness and goals for improvement of life. The therapist will teach you that some foods can actually increase your shortness of breath, that the volume of food has an impact on the way you breathe and that the frequency of meals contributes to either feeling well or being “short winded.”
The respiratory therapist will also teach patients how to properly administer their breathing medications. Most patients have not had the proper instructions on how to administer the drug. This will help ensure that the medicine will be delivered to the lungs properly and the patient will get the maximum benefit of the drug.
Completion of a pulmonary rehabilitation program will train you physically, mentally and emotionally to live a better life style with chronic lung disease and has been shown to decrease the number of hospital visits and the length of stay once you’re admitted.
