Heart Center
T.J. Samson Heart Center is a facility where cardiovascular procedures can be performed on adults in a safe environment to meet the individualized needs of each patient. Procedures are performed by highly specialized personnel.
Cardiac catheterization is a heart procedure where a doctor inserts a catheter into an artery or vein in the arm or leg. From there, it can be advanced into the chambers of the heart or the coronary arteries.
This test can measure blood pressure within the heart and the amount of oxygen that is in the blood. It is also used to measure the pumping ability of the heart muscle. Catheters can be used to inject dye into the coronary arteries, which is is called coronary angiography or coronary arteriography. Catheters with a balloon on the tip are used in the procedure called percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty.
The cardiovascular lab staff can also implant permanent pacemakers and implantable cardiovascular defibrillators (ICDs) as well as emergency coronary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction (MI) patients who meet selected clinical criteria.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiac rehabilitation is a comprehensive exercise and education program designed to improve the physical and emotional condition of patients with heart disease. Heart attack survivors, bypass and angioplasty patients, and people with angina, congestive heart failure, and heart transplants are all candidates for a cardiac rehabilitation program.
Cardiac rehabilitation is prescribed to control symptoms, improve exercise tolerance and improve the overall quality of life of our patients. This program is available through physician referral only.
The programs include treadmill and general exercises set specifically to your pace, as well as education about proper diet and nutrition to support healthy living. This program is typically 12 weeks long.
Telemedicine Clinic
The Telemedicine Clinic at T.J. Samson Community Hospital is an interactive audio/video system that allows patients to access high levels of specialty care without leaving Glasgow. T.J. Samson and Jewish Hospital in Louisville, KY, have established a working relationship to deliver this continuity of care for cardiac and thoracic patients in south central Kentucky. The patient can see and talk to physicians via the video conference unit, which provides face-to-face interaction.
Heart and lung sounds are recorded and various medical camera systems are used to gather patient information in the form of video and audio. This information is transmitted in “real time” to the health care professionals at the other site. The Kentucky Telemedicine Network has a secure line that ensures strict privacy and confidentiality to all patients.
